REPORTS TO: Manager, Student/Parent Support Workers




This position is responsible for providing support, advocacy and guidance to high school students to progress through and navigate the high school system.  SPSWs provide ongoing individual social and academic support to students in schools and the community.  This position is responsible for distributing student financial supports as well as regularly reviewing attendance data, credit accumulation, learning assessments and suspension reports.  This position is also responsible for supporting school attendance and credit attainment of students by acting as a liaison between students, schools, parents, YouthLink Pathways team, community partners and members. This position provides appropriate supports and student referrals to resources and community agencies and services.

Key Responsibilities:

·         Meets with students regularly in schools and community on social and academic personal goal setting. Engages and communicates with students regarding course learning levels, course selections and participates in Individual Education Plans (IEP) as necessary. Assesses and supports student personal strengths and works from a strength based perspective. Distributes financial supports to the students in accordance with program policies.

·         Writes reports and student case notes; collects and reports student data and information. Maintains accurate and up to date student documentation and reporting as required by YouthLink  and Pathways to Education Canada.

·         Meets with students’ guardians to address a variety of issues regarding their child’s school progress, program participation and recommendations.

·         Works in the schools to meet with students and coordinates with school staff regarding student support. Works closely with school administrative, guidance and teaching staff as necessary.

·         Advocates for and with students facing issues such as suspensions, mental health, justice-related challenges and employment/volunteer opportunities.

·         Makes recommendations on student’s continuance in the program and/or improvements in programming. Takes a lead role in registration and re-registration, as well as the program orientation process annually.

·         Attends and participates in Pathways programming/student-centred activities; community involvement.

·         Supports research elements of the program and demonstrates continual commitment to program involvement through research and evaluation.

·         Actively contributes to YouthLink’s strategic plan and service plan by participating in initiatives and committees to support the overall plans.

·         Takes all reasonable and necessary precautions to protect his or her own health and safety and that of co-workers by complying and demonstrating knowledge of the policies, procedures and safe practices established by YouthLink.

EDUCATION: ·         Undergraduate Degree in Social Work, Community Development or Degree/Diploma in Child and Youth Work or a combination of directly related education and experience.

·         Two (2) years’ experience working with youth in a variety of different contexts with at least one (1) year experience working in an Ontario High School as a teacher, Child Youth Worker, section program staff or within a consistent external partnership.

·         Experience working with youth from culturally diverse, low income communities as well as demonstrated knowledge of youth engagement practices, the impact of poverty in a community based program is a strong asset.·         Experience working with special needs students in the areas of numeracy, literacy, new language learners and/or special education is an asset.


·         Informal counseling techniques and case management skills.

·         Strong interpersonal, communication and written skills.

·         Proficient in computer usage skills and social media.

·         Ability to speak a second language spoken within the community (Tamil, Urdu, Farsi, Creole, French, Spanish) is an asset

·         Knowledge of Scarborough and/or Scarborough Village community an asset.

·         A valid G Level license and regular access to a vehicle is an asset

HOURS OF WORK: 35 hours per week including regular evening work and occasional weekends.


$43,407 – $49,175
