Community and Social Services Worker (Canada Summer Jobs Program)

(Contract Full-time 35 hours per week)

(July 4th, 2023 – August 28th, 2023)

(Non-Bargaining unit position)

As a Community and Social Services Worker, you will support the Housing team in the development and facilitation of housing and Life Skills workshops to support youth with their housing needs and transitional support to the community. The Community and Social Services Worker will support the Housing team with administrative work and develop landlord relations to create a comprehensive housing landlord list that will meet the program objectives for the fiscal year. 

Highlights of Your Role

  • Develop and facilitate housing and Life Skills workshops
  • Provide support to the Housing team with administrative tasks
  • Work with housing team to develop landlord relationships, and create a Landlord Housing List
  • Complete any other tasks as required
  • Communicates with Manager about any necessary information and participates in regular supervisions.
  • Adheres to all policies and procedures of the organization.
  • Participates in any workshops or trainings as required.
  • Takes all reasonable precautions to protect own health and safety.

Highlights of What You Bring

Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or College Diploma in related field(Social Work, Child and Youth Work, Social Services) or relevant mix of education and experience
  • Lived experience or knowledge of community an asset.
  • Previous experience in Shelter or Residential environments is an asset.
  • Understanding of anti-oppressive frameworks to develop rapport with “at risk youth” from various ethno-cultural groups
  • Understanding of the issue of youth homelessness and the barriers facing youth would be an asset
  • Ability to plan, develop and facilitate housing workshops
  • Ability to learn the case management model
  • Understanding of the Housing First Model, Residential Tenancy Act, Landlord and Tenant Board and subsidized housing would be an asset
  • Knowledge on housing and community supports would be an asset
  • Experience with administrative work (applications, data bases, and data collection, etc.)

Skills:

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and a demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse team and homeless youth
  • A demonstrated ability to organize work, set priorities, meet deadlines and work under pressure of time constraints
  • Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills, ability to listen compassionately to the needs of youth and landlords
  • Computer literacy with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook

Additional Requirements:

  • Full COVID-19 vaccination and Vulnerable Sector Check required.
  • Proof of 2 Step TB tests required.
  • Must be able to work in a Pet Friendly Shelter.
  • This position will be scheduled up to 3 evenings per week and scheduled occasional weekends. Some travel to community locations required.
  • Ability to travel within the city to meet with landlords and participate in viewings
  • Between 15 and 30 years of age.
  • Legally entitled to work in Canada (which means you must have a valid Social Insurance Number)

Hourly Rate: $15.50 per hour.
