Food Services Helper (Canada Summer Jobs Program)
(Contract Full-time 35 hours per week)
(July 4th, 2023 – August 28th, 2023)
(Non-bargaining unit position)
The Food Services Worker student placement will support in the development and facilitation of cooking workshops and support with day-to-day food operations at YouthLink’s Transitional Housing and Shelter Program. The Food Services Worker will develop a” how to cook” manual as a resource for youth to increase their skills and understanding in these areas contributing to their financial and housing stability in the community.
Highlights of Your Role
- Ability to support the Chef with coordination and preparation of meals
- Ability to develop menus that have creative, nutritional and health meals
- In coordination with the Chef, develop weekly menu that provides variety and meet dietary and cultural and/or religious practices (meets Shelter Standards)
- Support with weekly Second Harvest and Daily Bread deliveries
- Responsible for coordination of all food donation: receiving, sorting, storage and complete any paper work required for processing donation
- Complete any other tasks as required
- Communicates with Manager about any necessary information and participates in regular supervisions.
- Adheres to all policies and procedures of the organization.
- Participates in any workshops or trainings as required.
- Takes all reasonable precautions to protect own health and safety.
Highlights of What You Bring
Experience:
- Certificate in Cooking/Food Preparation and/or Kitchen Management, Hospitality, or equivalent training and/or prior experience working in a kitchen
- Experience in food service industry would be an asset
- Experience working with youth is an asset
- Lived experience or knowledge of community an asset.
- Previous experience in Shelter or Residential environments is an asset.
- Experience working independently and within a large team
- Food Handler’s Certification would be an asset
- First Aid and CPR Certification would be an asset
- Lived experience, knowledge and understanding and knowledge of systemic barriers and oppression rooted in colonization, racism, transphobia, classism, misogyny, moralism, ableism, and how they impact young people.
- Operates using and Anti- Black Racism /Anti- Oppression lens and strength based frameworks
Skills:
- Effective communication and conflict resolution skills
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to problem – solve individually or in a team setting.
- Proficient computer use skills.
Additional Requirements:
- Full COVID-19 vaccination and Vulnerable Sector Check required.
- Proof of 2 Step TB tests required.
- Must be able to work in a Pet Friendly Shelter.
- This position will be scheduled up to 3 evenings per week and scheduled occasional weekends. Minimal travel to community locations.
- This position requires the ability to lift food items and kitchen equipment, assist with the receiving and unpacking of food deliveries and donations.
- Between 15 and 30 years of age.
- Legally entitled to work in Canada (which means you must have a valid Social Insurance Number)
Hourly Rate: $15.50 per hour.
