PROGRAM: Youth Transitional Housing and Shelter Program

LOCATION: 747 Warden Avenue

Scarborough, ON M1L 4A1

We are seeking a part-time cooks for our new Youth Transitional Housing and Shelter Program. The cook is responsible for nutritious meal planning, food preparation, kitchen maintenance, and maintaining health and safety standards for up to 51 residents in the Shelter and Transitional Housing Program.


  • Preparing ingredients to use in cooking (chopping, peeling, cutting etc.)

  • Serve meals according to the established menu including packing lunches for the next day where appropriate and needed.

  • Refer to Daily Prep List at the start of each shift for assigned duties.

  • Clean up the kitchen after each meal and at the end of each day. Clean dishes, wipe down surfaces, and place all things back in their place. Store food according to health guidelines.

  • Maintaining hygiene and health and safety standards as required by legislation.

  • Communicate with staff and possibly residents in regards to nutrition, possible food allergies or specific food needs.

  • Work effectively with residents, staff and volunteers.

  • Responds to head cook for the daily, weekly and monthly kitchen responsibilities.

  • Sign off on daily closing checklist.

  • Knows and complies consistently with our standard portion sizes, cooking methods, quality standards and kitchen rules, recipes, policies and procedures.
  • Maintains a clean and sanitary work station area.



  • High School Diploma or equivalent required. College Diploma/ Certificate in Hospitality, Culinary Arts or Food Service Worker strongly preferred.


  • 2 years’ experience as a Cook

  • Valid First Aid

  • Safe Food Handling Certification

  • Ability to work cooperatively in a team-oriented environment

  • Appreciation of diversity issues and demonstrated experience cooking food from a variety of cultures

  • Ability to resolve issues with supervisors and co-workers in a manner that is respectful and cooperative in accordance with the agency culture and philosophy

  • Flexible person, team player who has strong organizational skills, time management skills, the ability to multi-task, shift priorities, and handle interruptions

  • Maintain the confidentiality of all residents in the Emergency Shelter and Transitional Housing Program

  • Police Vulnerable Sector Check required

  • Medical clearance including up to date vaccination and tuberculosis testing

  • Pet Friendly shelter

CONTRACT HOURS: 20 hours per week. Evenings 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and every second weekend.

CONTRACT PERIOD: Starting ASAP for a 12-month contract

CONTRACTOR RATE: $20.00 per hour
